Advocates for the blind are getting their wish, after automakers agree to make electric cars nosier. The almost noiseless vehicle is endangering the lives of the hearing impaired, while they try and cross the street.

Groups joined together and went to congress with a proposal to make hybrid cars have a slight noise, and congress agreed.

“As a person who walks my dog in Virginia, where there are no sidewalks, I’ve been startled by hybrid cars, too,” said Gloria Bergquist, vice president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.

Little electric car

A study that was conducted last year by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed that hybrid cars hit pedestrians more often than normal gas cars when the pedestrian cannot see the car.

The sound the car would make cannot be customized either, thus driving down the street blasting the “Notre Dame Fight Song” won’t fly. The sound hasn’t yet been determined but the sound will only be heard at low speeds. The NHFA said cars operating at high speeds have enough sound from the wind and engine noise.

Expect to see the new law put into the Motor Safety Act of 2010, a bill is currently moving through congress.
